Design Principles I Live By
March 12, 2026
These aren't rules. They're more like recurring observations — things I notice myself returning to whenever a project goes sideways or a piece isn't working.
Simplicity is a direction, not a destination
You don't arrive at simple. You move toward it, and the movement itself is the practice. Every decision that removes friction, clarifies purpose, or strips away decoration in service of the thing itself — that's the work.
Imperfection is information
The crack in the glaze, the slightly uneven rim, the place where a stitch pulls: these aren't failures, they're data. They tell you something about the material, the process, yourself. Learn to read them before you try to eliminate them.
Make for one person
When I'm making something, I try to picture a specific person holding it, using it, living with it. Not a demographic. A person. It makes every decision easier and every piece more honest.
